Shoojit Sircar brings Ayushmann Khurrana and Amitabh Bachchan together in his next 'Gulabo Sitabo'

Filmmaker’s next directorial is a comedy set in Lucknow that goes on the fl oors in June and will hit screens in November

After casting ~Ayushmann Khurrana, in Vicky Donor (2012) and working with ~Amitabh Bachchan ,in Piku (2015), Shoojit Sircar is bringing the two actors together for yet another quirky comedy. And unlike his previous outings in the genre, this one, curiously titled Gulabo Sitabo, will be set in Lucknow.

The film, which will see Ayushmann and the Big B share screen space for the first time, is written by Juhi Chaturvedi, who had penned the actors’ previous collaborations with Shoojit, as also the Varun Dhawan and Banita Sandhu-starrer October. The Ronnie Lahiri and Sheel Kumar production goes on the floors next month.

“Juhi and I have been working on this script for a while now. We all know whenever she comes up with a story, it has her trademark quirk. As soon as I read it, I shared it with Mr Bachchan and Ayushmann at the same time. I thought it would take some time to develop and take it forward, but everyone was so enthusiastic to work on this script, they figured out their dates and here we are, planning to release the film this year itself,” Shoojit tells Mirror.

When asked about the origin of the film’s title, the director informs that it is a colloquial term used in the Uttar Pradesh Capital. “Regarding its association with the story… you will have to wait and watch the film to know more,” he adds. Traditionally, Gulabo and Sitabo are glove puppet characters from the North Indian state, made of papier-mâché and dressed in colourful clothes and trinkets. In the story, which borrows its title from their names, Sitabo is the worn-out, overworked wife of a man, while Gulabo is his enticing mistress. It is peppered with local humour and songs that depict the nuances of daily life.

While Shoojit is currently filming the Udham Singh biopic with Vicky Kaushal as the lead, Ayushmann is shooting for Amar Kaushik’s Bala with Bhumi Pednekar and Yami Gautam. Meanwhile, Bachchan started work on Rumi Jaffery’s upcoming directorial, a thriller titled Chehre, last Friday. The film also features Emraan Hashmi.
